The Magpie Centre Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) West Norfolk has temporarily closed for a minimum of six weeks following confirmation of a single case of strangles within our resident equine herd.
As a local charity, The Magpie Centre located near Downham Market provides life-changing equine-assisted activities for disabled children and adults, creating opportunities for people to grow in confidence, improve their wellbeing and experience the unique partnership between horse and rider.
Following advice from our veterinary team, the Centre has temporarily suspended all riding sessions, volunteering and participant visits while our horses are monitored and cared for.
Strangles is a highly contagious bacterial infection that affects horses, ponies and donkeys, but it cannot be passed to humans. Although there is currently only one confirmed case, acting quickly is the most responsible way to protect our horses and the wider equine community.
While the Centre is closed to visitors, the care of our horses continues every day. Our team will be using this time to support their recovery, carry out maintenance around the Centre and prepare for the safe return of our participants, volunteers and supporters.
As a charity, the closure also places added pressure on our finances. Although our sessions have paused, the daily costs of caring for our horses remain the same. If anyone is able to support us through a donation or fundraising activity, every contribution will help ensure we can continue providing the highest standard of care during this period.
We know how much the Magpie Centre means to so many people, and we'll be sharing regular updates on Facebook and Instagram throughout the coming weeks. From educational information about strangles to behind-the-scenes stories from the yard and updates on our horses, we hope our online community will continue this journey with us until we can safely reopen.
Cath, Chairman of The Magpie Centre RDA West Norfolk, said:
"Closing the Centre was a difficult decision, but it was absolutely the right one. Our horses are at the heart of everything we do, and their welfare will always come first. Although this is a challenging time for everyone connected with the Centre, we're looking ahead, caring for our horses and preparing to welcome everyone back as soon as it's safe to do so.
We're incredibly grateful for the support of our volunteers, participants, donors and the local community. We hope you'll stay connected with us over the coming weeks and, if you're able, help support the charity while our doors are temporarily closed."
